Covid-19 has seen more than 100 countries across the world desperately launching QR codes to trace human movement in order to effectively control the virus spread in the fight against this terrible pandemic that has hit more than 200 countries globally.
This is the time where we should be very vigilant when we scan QR codes to make sure we keep our mobile data safe from hackers and scammers. If you care about your mobile security, stay away from malicious QR codes!
This is the time where we should be very vigilant when we scan QR codes to make sure we keep our mobile data safe from hackers and scammers. If you care about your mobile security, stay away from malicious QR codes!
Share Share News Singapore has researched the internet to offer you some practical advice on how to spot and avoid malicious QR codes:
- CHOOSE a highly reviewed mobile QR code / barcode-scanning app that previews URLs. Avoid scanning suspicious codes and links that don’t seem to match the ads they’re incorporated in; also avoid shortened links that may disguise the website address that they link to once you scan the QR code with your mobile phone.
- DO NOT scan QR codes in the form of stickers placed randomly on walls. QR codes can be generated by anybody and stuck on walls in public places. And in today’s QR code hype, scammers think someone’s bound to scan such a code, just for curiosity. They can also stick malicious QR codes over legit ones on a billboard. So look at a QR code placed in public places closely before you scan it.
- BE extra careful if your smartphone works on the Android mobile operating system. Android is an open platform, which means that its source code can be examined by criminals and exploited easily when they find a weakness in, say, the Android browser. That’s why most malicious apps transmitted via QR codes target the Android-based smartphones. So, make sure your Android browser is always up-to-date and only scan QR codes from trusted sources.
- INSTALL a mobile security app right away. An efficient mobile security suite, e.g. Kaspersky QR Scanner (free to download), can protect you from all living cyber-creatures, such as viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and other malware that can be transmitted via QR codes. Such reputable QR scanners usually are equipped with powerful antivirus system that runs silently in the background to protect you, and a Security Manager that enables you to edit the Antitheft and Parental Control settings.

Wearing a cloth face mask or covering is not some shabby ineffective option of preventing the spread of Covid-19 because it's preventing the particles that comes out from a person's mouth when a person coughs out in the open into the general public. In that situation, a cloth mask is as efficient as any medical grade mask. Especially now when disposable surgical masks or N95 masks is currently short on availability. If cloth masks are worn universally by the general public, this will dramatically reduce asymptomatic spread of the virus as well as provide adequate protection against virus inhalation.
With the increased use of your reusable mask, how often and how should you wash it?
With the increased use of your reusable mask, how often and how should you wash it?
All face coverings — DIY or otherwise — should meet the following requirements:
- Fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
- Be secured with ties or ear loops
- Includes multiple layers of fabric
- Allows for breathing without restriction
- Can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
MACHINE-WASH WITH NORMAL DETERGENT AND HOT-WATER CYCLE
You can wash your masks, along with your clothes, in the washing machine even without special antibacterial laundry soap. Dr Raymond Fong, the chief and senior consultant at Changi General Hospital's Infectious Diseases department said "Washing with clean, warm water and soap should suffice." Just use the hottest setting on your washing machine to neutralise the microbes, then let heat drying – be it direct sun or the dryer – eradicate any remaining pathogens on the mask.

You may hand wash your fabric mask in hot water
If you’re concerned with the mask’s dye ruining your clothes in the washing machine – as some netizens have experienced – then you better hand-wash it. Wash your mask with warm, soapy water for at least one minute and dry it, preferably in the sun. Regular cleaning, especially after a day’s use or when the mask is visibly soiled or moist is most important.
You may use heat treatment to kill the virus and germs on your mask
Whether you choose to machine or hand wash your reusable fabric mask, drying it properly equally important as the washing. Studies suggest that the duration of sun exposure required to reduce contamination of some viruses by 90 per cent is over an hour of direct exposure to midday sun. On cloudy or rainy days, when there is not enough sun exposure, the dryer can be used. You could also iron or put your mask in a clean oven for 20 minutes at about 70 degrees Celsius. Be careful not to burn it though.
Once in a while, you may boil it in water
Boil your mask in water for five minutes, recommended Professor Rachel Noble, a microbiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on Pop Science. However, the downside to this method is, your fabric mask quality may deteriorate after a few rounds of boiling.

There are many amazing benefits that come along with consistent meditation practice, and a better focus is witnessed among many meditation practitioners. This is not about religion, it is just a focus exercise that anyone can try. Now is the ideal time to start learning how this helps in your daily life.
For beginners, I would advice you to try following a guided meditation. Trying out meditation on your own may make you sleepy and feeling bored because you don’t really know what you are doing. Sitting still and focusing on the present moment is a new experience when you’re just starting out.
Guided meditations are essentially meditations where a voice guides you through the entire process. There are many different apps (such as Headspace, Omvana and Stop, Breathe & Think) that provide hundreds of different guided meditations, all with a specific purpose and time length. Or you simply type in ‘guided meditation on YouTube or Spotify.

After choosing your guided meditation or if you choose to sit and meditate for some quiet "me" time, I’ll quickly go through some guidelines that help you meditate on your own
Step 1: Set a timer for 10–20 minutes
This is a comfortable time frame to meditate if you want it to have a real impact on your concentration ability. For beginners, you can also try a 5–10 minutes session first to get used to the habit.
Step 2: Sit with your back straight
If you’re sloughed, chances are you might fall asleep or feel some pains and aches which will get you out of the present moment and can lead to more thoughts in your mind.

Step 3: Make sure your arms aren’t folded or closed
An open posture usually leads to a calmer meditation.
Step 4: Close your eyes and focus on your breath
This will help you calm down faster and become less distracted. By putting all your focus and concentrate on your breath, you’ll start to calm down your mind. Simply follow your breath as you inhale and exhale. Try to focus on it for as long as you can you'll experience silence in your busy mind.
Step 5: Don’t get frustrated when thoughts pop up or when it’s noisy outside
Thoughts will definitely pop up in your mind during your meditation, maybe a lot more than you’d expect. This is completely normal, as your brain is simply designed to keep thinking. When thoughts pop up during your meditation, simply be aware of them and don’t get frustrated. Just calmly bring your attention back to your breath to help you get back to the present moment again.
Sometimes, your mind need this moment to process past experiences. This may be a good thing because now you’ll have less mental clutter and more available space for focusing and thinking clearly. The real ‘training’ is to stay calm, focused and present even when your external environment isn’t.
Step 6: Repeat Daily
Try to meditate daily, preferably in the morning when you just woke up. Do not look at your computer or mobile phone when you wake up, just meditate first. This way, you’ll start the day with a clear, positive calm and focussed mind — and you’ll be ready to face your day ahead.
It’s important to note that the benefits of meditation may not necessarily be noticeable right after or during your meditation (although they very well can be!). Amazing effects will be noticed only after a few weeks of consistent meditation daily. Trust me, you'll only regret not starting this earlier.

Bicycle crunch is a great way to target the rectus abdominis and the obliques in one easy exercise. Lie flat on the floor with lower back pressed to the ground (pull your navel in to also target your deep abs).
A plank is a total-body movement, it challenges your core and work on your buttock, shoulders, legs & arms. When you add movement, you have to work harder to stabilize your hips, your core & buttock.
The reverse crunch is a basic core strengthening exercise improving stability throughout the lower back, hips & spine. Lie on your back with your knees together & your legs bent upwards to 90 degrees.

Jump squat - Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Start by doing a regular squat, then engage your core and jump up explosively. When you land, lower your body back into the squat position to complete one rep. Land as quietly as possible, which requires control.
Cossack squat is a squat where you descend with most of your weight on one leg while the other leg is kept out straight and to the side. The other foot will typically have the heel on the ground but the rest of the foot up in the air.
Lunges - Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Step forward with one leg into a long stride and lower into a lunge, bending both knees and keeping your posture upright while ensuring your knees don't travel over your toes. 3. Drive through your front heel to return to standing.

The Elbows-in pushup is an exercise that builds both upper-body & core strength. Done properly, it is a compound exercise that uses muscles in the chest, shoulders, triceps, back, abs & the legs.
The Push-up burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise. The athlete performs one push-up after assuming the extended plank position.

Now even more than usual, we have a very good reason to exercise: Working out contributes to good health, which in turn helps us maintain better immune systems. Exercising is a great way to while away time as people spend more time at home, far from the friends and family they usually see. Exercise is also well known for its mood-boosting abilities, and many of us could use a lift.

A pandemic is defined as the "worldwide spread" of a new disease. Whereas, an outbreak is the occurrence of disease cases in excess of what's normally expected and an epidemic is more than a normal number cases of an illness, specific health-related behavior or other health-related events in a community or region, according to the World Health Organization.
There are currently 118,000 cases, more than 4,000 deaths, the agency said, and the virus has found a foothold on every continent except for Antarctica. Chancellor Angela Merkel foresees two-thirds of Germans being infected. The U.S., with more than 1,000 cases and business disruptions, weighs possible responses. The spread of the coronavirus across more than 100 countries now qualifies as a global pandemic.
"We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus. And we have never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled at the same time," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday - 11 March 2020.
Until now, the W.H.O. had avoided using the term to describe the epidemic leapfrogging across the world, for fear of giving the impression that it was unstoppable and countries would give up on trying to contain it. The organization had said earlier in the outbreak that it no longer officially declared when an epidemic reaches pandemic proportions, preferring instead to declare global public health emergencies.

"Describing the situation as a pandemic does not change WHO's assessment of the threat posed by this coronavirus. It doesn't change what WHO is doing, and it doesn't change what countries should do."
If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilize their people in the response, those with a handful of novel coronavirus cases can prevent those cases becoming clusters, and those clusters becoming community transmission. Several countries have demonstrated that this virus can be suppressed and controlled.
"WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction," Ghebreyesus said. "We cannot say this loudly enough, or clearly enough, or often enough: All countries can still change the course of this pandemic".
Although we are far more prepared than in the past, we are also far more interconnected, and many more people today have chronic health problems that make viral infections particularly dangerous.
The last pandemic reported in the world was the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009, which killed hundreds of thousands globally. - CNN news article on 11 March 2020

Coronavirus can survive on hard surfaces such as phone screens for up to a week and offers a potential route of infection, scientists warn. The hardy virus spreads via droplets released in coughs and sneezes and the residue can remain potent for seven days on surfaces such as handles and handsets.
Experts warn phones could be acting as a petri dish cultivating the killer microbe and say alcohol wipes should be used twice a day to disinfect the device.
Official advice says using disinfectant and regular and thorough hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The Square Knot
The square knot is a classic for connecting lines and tying knots. Whether you are tying two ropes together to make a longer rope, or you are tying up a bundle of firewood to carry, the square knot is a winner. It’s much more secure and stable than its cousin the granny knot, which everyone is probably familiar with as part of tying their shoes.
How to tie a square knot: You can tie a solid square knot by lapping one rope right over left, then underneath the other, and then tying the same again in the reverse direction—left over right and then underneath. You’ll know you did it right when the working end and standing end of each rope is side by side (not making a “cross” like a granny knot).
Switch to the square knot today and sidestep the inconvenience of loose laces or struggling to untie your double knots at the end of the day!

The Clove Hitch
The clove hitch is an easy knot to tie, and it secures a line to a tree or post quickly, but it does slip when used alone, without any other knots as a backup.
How to tie a Clove Hitch: To create a clove hitch on a tree, make a loop of rope around the tree. Then make another loop and pass the free end of the rope under the second loop before tightening. To tie this one over a post or stake, just create a loop in the free end of the rope and slide it over the post. Then make another loop the same as the first. Put the second loop over the post (just above the first loop) and tighten the hitch.

The Bowline
The bowline creates a loop at the end of a rope that cannot shrink or expand. This knot is often taught and illustrated with a poem of a rabbit coming out of the hole, hopping in front of a tree, going behind the tree, and back down his original hole.
How to tie a Bowline: form a loop on top of the long end of the line. Pass the working end of the line up through the loop and around behind the line. Then pass the working end down through the original loop, all while maintaining the shape of the second loop you create, which becomes your bowline loop. Once the “rabbit” is back down its hole, pull the “tree” up to tighten the bowline. - Tim MacWelch / Outdoor Life
