Meditation can be a great exercise to help you improve your focus and concentration

There are many amazing benefits that come along with consistent meditation practice, and a better focus is witnessed among many meditation practitioners. This is not about religion, it is just a focus exercise that anyone can try. Now is the ideal time to start learning how this helps in your daily life.

For beginners, I would advice you to try following a guided meditation. Trying out meditation on your own may make you sleepy and feeling bored because you don’t really know what you are doing. Sitting still and focusing on the present moment is a new experience when you’re just starting out.

Guided meditations are essentially meditations where a voice guides you through the entire process. There are many different apps (such as Headspace, Omvana and Stop, Breathe & Think) that provide hundreds of different guided meditations, all with a specific purpose and time length. Or you simply type in ‘guided meditation on YouTube or Spotify.

Kopar at Newton is an upcoming condo that is only 2 mins walk to Newton Food Centre and within 4 minutes walk to Newton MRT interchange (Downtown Line and North South Line) & a short drive to Orchard Road & CBD

After choosing your guided meditation or if you choose to sit and meditate for some quiet "me" time, I’ll quickly go through some guidelines that help you meditate on your own

Step 1: Set a timer for 10–20 minutes
This is a comfortable time frame to meditate if you want it to have a real impact on your concentration ability. For beginners, you can also try a 5–10 minutes session first to get used to the habit.

Step 2: Sit with your back straight
If you’re sloughed, chances are you might fall asleep or feel some pains and aches which will get you out of the present moment and can lead to more thoughts in your mind.

Sengkang Grand Residences is an upcoming fully integrated condo by CapitaLand & CDL with community hub, hawker centre, supermarket, community club, retail & F&B outlets above Buangkok MRT & Bus Interchange

Step 3: Make sure your arms aren’t folded or closed
An open posture usually leads to a calmer meditation.

Step 4: Close your eyes and focus on your breath
This will help you calm down faster and become less distracted. By putting all your focus and concentrate on your breath, you’ll start to calm down your mind. Simply follow your breath as you inhale and exhale. Try to focus on it for as long as you can you'll experience silence in your busy mind.

Step 5: Don’t get frustrated when thoughts pop up or when it’s noisy outside
Thoughts will definitely pop up in your mind during your meditation, maybe a lot more than you’d expect. This is completely normal, as your brain is simply designed to keep thinking. When thoughts pop up during your meditation, simply be aware of them and don’t get frustrated. Just calmly bring your attention back to your breath to help you get back to the present moment again.
Sometimes, your mind need this moment to process past experiences. This may be a good thing because now you’ll have less mental clutter and more available space for focusing and thinking clearly. The real ‘training’ is to stay calm, focused and present even when your external environment isn’t.

Step 6: Repeat Daily
Try to meditate daily, preferably in the morning when you just woke up. Do not look at your computer or mobile phone when you wake up, just meditate first. This way, you’ll start the day with a clear, positive calm and focussed mind — and you’ll be ready to face your day ahead.

It’s important to note that the benefits of meditation may not necessarily be noticeable right after or during your meditation (although they very well can be!). Amazing effects will be noticed only after a few weeks of consistent meditation daily. Trust me, you'll only regret not starting this earlier.

As concerns of the novel coronavirus increase, companies are encouraging staff to work from home and gyms are temporarily closing as a cautionary measure, dramatically reducing the places people can visit to stay fit. But just as more people work from home, those looking to break a sweat and keep working out can bring their fitness routines home, as well via workout videos and routines that mimic the fitness studio experience.

Workout videos provide an excellent resource for establishing a new fitness routine, reducing stress, and release endorphins during an otherwise sedentary and anxiety-provoking time.
Below, we've selected a few different appealing workout types to help replicate the gym experience and stay healthy.

Bicycle crunch is a great way to target the rectus abdominis and the obliques in one easy exercise. Lie flat on the floor with lower back pressed to the ground (pull your navel in to also target your deep abs).

A
plank is a total-body movement, it challenges your core and work on your buttock, shoulders, legs & arms. When you add movement, you have to work harder to stabilize your hips, your core & buttock.

The
reverse crunch is a basic core strengthening exercise improving stability throughout the lower back, hips & spine. Lie on your back with your knees together & your legs bent upwards to 90 degrees.

Jump squat - Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Start by doing a regular squat, then engage your core and jump up explosively. When you land, lower your body back into the squat position to complete one rep. Land as quietly as possible, which requires control.

Cossack squat is a squat where you descend with most of your weight on one leg while the other leg is kept out straight and to the side. The other foot will typically have the heel on the ground but the rest of the foot up in the air.

Lunges - Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Step forward with one leg into a long stride and lower into a lunge, bending both knees and keeping your posture upright while ensuring your knees don't travel over your toes. 3. Drive through your front heel to return to standing.

A Tricep dip is an upper-body strength exercise. Narrow, shoulder-width dips primarily train the triceps, with major synergists being the anterior deltoid, the pectoralis muscles (sternal, clavicular, and minor), and the rhomboid muscles of the back (in that order).

The Elbows-in pushup is an exercise that builds both upper-body & core strength. Done properly, it is a compound exercise that uses muscles in the
chest, shoulders, triceps, back, abs & the legs.

The Push-up burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training and as an aerobic exercise. The athlete performs one push-up after assuming the extended plank position.

Pasir Ris Central Residences is an exciting upcoming condo offering ultimate integrated convenience bringing together, a shopping mall integrated with Pasir Ris MRT station & Bus Interchange developed by reputable Allgreen

Now even more than usual, we have a very good reason to exercise: Working out contributes to good health, which in turn helps us maintain better immune systems. Exercising is a great way to while away time as people spend more time at home, far from the friends and family they usually see. Exercise is also well known for its mood-boosting abilities, and many of us could use a lift.

We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus. And we have never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled at the same time - WHO

A pandemic is defined as the "worldwide spread" of a new disease. Whereas, an outbreak is the occurrence of disease cases in excess of what's normally expected and an epidemic is more than a normal number cases of an illness, specific health-related behavior or other health-related events in a community or region, according to the World Health Organization.

There are currently 118,000 cases, more than 4,000 deaths, the agency said, and the virus has found a foothold on every continent except for Antarctica. Chancellor Angela Merkel foresees two-thirds of Germans being infected. The U.S., with more than 1,000 cases and business disruptions, weighs possible responses. The spread of the coronavirus across more than 100 countries now qualifies as a global pandemic.

"We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus. And we have never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled at the same time," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday - 11 March 2020.

Until now, the W.H.O. had avoided using the term to describe the epidemic leapfrogging across the world, for fear of giving the impression that it was unstoppable and countries would give up on trying to contain it. The organization had said earlier in the outbreak that it no longer officially declared when an epidemic reaches pandemic proportions, preferring instead to declare global public health emergencies.
"Describing the situation as a pandemic does not change WHO's assessment of the threat posed by this coronavirus. It doesn't change what WHO is doing, and it doesn't change what countries should do."

If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilize their people in the response, those with a handful of novel coronavirus cases can prevent those cases becoming clusters, and those clusters becoming community transmission. Several countries have demonstrated that this virus can be suppressed and controlled.

"WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction," Ghebreyesus said. "We cannot say this loudly enough, or clearly enough, or often enough: All countries can still change the course of this pandemic".

Although we are far more prepared than in the past, we are also far more interconnected, and many more people today have chronic health problems that make viral infections particularly dangerous.

The last pandemic reported in the world was the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009, which killed hundreds of thousands globally. - CNN news article on 11 March 2020

Knot tying is something that many have not learnt in school but it can be an important life saving skill if you are able to tie good knots in times of need.

There are more than 40 types of knots but not all are essential knots that every person may need to know, unless you're a climber or sailor.

Here at Share Share News Singapore, we recommend for practically that you only need to know three types of knots. That's right, three - thats all you rally need to learn. Learn how to do them and what they're good for, and the usefulness of these simple knot skills will make your life easier and may even save your life one day. So, if all you know is the overhand knot from having learned to tie your shoe laces as a kid, it's time for a brush-up on your skillset.
The Square Knot
The square knot is a classic for connecting lines and tying knots. Whether you are tying two ropes together to make a longer rope, or you are tying up a bundle of firewood to carry, the square knot is a winner. It’s much more secure and stable than its cousin the granny knot, which everyone is probably familiar with as part of tying their shoes.

How to tie a square knot: You can tie a solid square knot by lapping one rope right over left, then underneath the other, and then tying the same again in the reverse direction—left over right and then underneath. You’ll know you did it right when the working end and standing end of each rope is side by side (not making a “cross” like a granny knot).

Switch to the square knot today and sidestep the inconvenience of loose laces or struggling to untie your double knots at the end of the day!
The Clove Hitch
The clove hitch is an easy knot to tie, and it secures a line to a tree or post quickly, but it does slip when used alone, without any other knots as a backup.

How to tie a Clove Hitch: To create a clove hitch on a tree, make a loop of rope around the tree. Then make another loop and pass the free end of the rope under the second loop before tightening. To tie this one over a post or stake, just create a loop in the free end of the rope and slide it over the post. Then make another loop the same as the first. Put the second loop over the post (just above the first loop) and tighten the hitch.

The Bowline
The bowline creates a loop at the end of a rope that cannot shrink or expand. This knot is often taught and illustrated with a poem of a rabbit coming out of the hole, hopping in front of a tree, going behind the tree, and back down his original hole.

How to tie a Bowline: form a loop on top of the long end of the line. Pass the working end of the line up through the loop and around behind the line. Then pass the working end down through the original loop, all while maintaining the shape of the second loop you create, which becomes your bowline loop. Once the “rabbit” is back down its hole, pull the “tree” up to tighten the bowline. - Tim MacWelch / Outdoor Life

Coronavirus can survive on hard surfaces such as handphone screens for up to a week

Coronavirus can survive on hard surfaces such as phone screens for up to a week and offers a potential route of infection, scientists warn. The hardy virus spreads via droplets released in coughs and sneezes and the residue can remain potent for seven days on surfaces such as handles and handsets.
Experts warn phones could be acting as a petri dish cultivating the killer microbe and say alcohol wipes should be used twice a day to disinfect the device.

Official advice says using disinfectant and regular and thorough hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Global confirmed Covid-19 Coronavirus cases as at 3 March 2020

Professor William Keevil, from the University of Southampton explained that 'You could be washing your hands, but if you start touching your smartphone screen and then touch your face that is a potential route of infection.

Governments across the world are doing their best to battle this virus and advising citizens to wash their hands diligently, Share Shares News Singapore believe we should also be vigilant in cleaning our smartphone screens to erase the risk of virus manifesting on our phone screens. - Dailymail UK News

As part of Singapore's continuing effort to curb phone scams made thru overseas phone calls that are disguised as a local call from Singapore, e.g. numbers displaying 999, 995, etc but actually are made through VOIP or complex web servers, from 14 April 2020 onwards, all incoming international calls will be prefixed with a plus sign (+) as part of efforts to protect members of the public from scam calls.

Pasir Ris Central Residences include 480 apartments above three levels of retail space, developed by reputable Allgreen Properties - right in the heart of Pasir Ris Central, above the MRT and bus interchange

From 15 Apr 2020, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will require all telecommunication companies (telcos) in Singapore to introduce this measure to help combat such spoof calls from overseas. Domestic calls will not display such a prefix.
According to the Singapore Police Force’s annual crime brief for 2019, more than S$21 million was reported lost to impersonation scams.

International scammers are known to impersonate local phone numbers. Therefore, after 15 April 2020, all overseas calls coming in will be identified and identifiable by having the plus prefix.

The government believes this will help consumers better identify international spoof calls and reject them. The Government will continue to develop additional measures to combat scams so that Singaporeans can be better protected against such unscrupulous scammers. - CNA source
